ABOUT BUNYA RED FARM & US!

A Passion to Grow

We, Allan and Mandy moved to the South Burnett in 2006, after being away for nearly 30 years. We were coming back to be closer to family at Murgon, and to find a rural change of pace and scenery.  We fell in love with the place as soon as we saw it.  It has 360 degree panoramic views of the Bunya Mountains and surrounding countryside.  It was close to Brisbane, Toowoomba, the Sunshine Coast, our children and families.

The Family Business

The possibilities and potential of the rich red volcanic soil stirred the ‘farmers’ from within.  Both of us grew up on farms. We made the decision that we were not going to rely on farming incomes for our young family in our earlier years.  We had lived the struggles of growing up in a family on the land, through long droughts and floods.  So now, all these years later, when in search of a more peaceful lifestyle, we decided to move back to the land. However, we knew a more diversified approach to farming was required.

The question of ‘what do we do’ with all this land loomed. (The farm was bigger than we were initially looking for, but the views are spectacular). The local area is rich in agriculture with the main crops at the time being peanuts, corn, wheat, beans, stone fruit, olives and wine (Which we knew nothing about).

With a Mediterranean climate, we looked for a unique crop that was not equipment intensive, as we didn’t have much, and was tolerant of the climatic conditions of the area. The temperatures can fluctuate with very cold winters of -4 to above 40+ degree days in summer. Long dry seasons and few wet seasons.  It varies.  We had been inspired by a story about Capers seen on ABC Landline, and we felt that they would fit our criteria, so why not give them a go. So that’s where it started.

From Farm to Table

Bunya Red Farm is 160 acres (64 hectares) and used for grazing cattle on about 60 acres, a peanut/sorghum/wheat/corn rotation on 90 acres, with the alpacas, a small tree plantation, vegetable garden and capers on the remaining acres around the house and old farm buildings.

We knew it was always going to be a long term project to get the farm tidied up. There’s always something to be done. There is an original one room school building on the farm, an old piggery and dairy plus plenty of old fences needing to be repaired or replaced. It keeps us busy. But it’s the wide open spaces, the peace and quiet, the sunsets and sunrises, the stars at night, the blue of the beautiful Bunya Mountains, the green of the kikuyu grass happily eaten by the cows & the alpacas, the country air are all part of why we live in the country.

We would love to hear from you and look forward to sharing our evolving story.
